The Watts Prophets were born in a community with many of the world's great jazz musicians. The Watts Prophets learned from and interacted with these talented musicians. Sometimes they were the only ones open to something new and often encouraged The Watts Prophets to continue developing their art form. The Watts Prophets combined elements of jazz music and spoken-word performance, making the trio a forerunner of contemporary hip-hop music. The Watts Prophets coined the word "Rappin" when they opened their first performance in 1967 with the chant "Rappin Black, Rappin Facts, Rappin Black, Rappin Facts ". They were poets Rappin and their first album was entitled "Rappin While Black". "Rappin' while Black" encompasses the complex intersection of hip-hop as a form of Black creative expression born from urban social crisis, and the systemic criminalization of these lyrics by police and prosecutors. It highlights issues of authenticity, socioeconomic commentary, and the disproportionate targeting of Black artists. This is the fouth Edition of the first book of poetry written by the Legendary Watts Prophets first published in 1993.
