In 1954, the Supreme Court handed down the Brown v. Board of Education decision outlawing racially segregated schools. Subsequent court decisions have gradually gutted the great democratic educational gains made in the Brown case. Today the segregation of poor and minority children in our urban school systems is greater than it was before Brown .
