Extraordinary -- A Wonderful Blend of Science & Compassion

What a wonderful little book! Insightful, well-written, and, best of all, effective. I've given two copies as gifts already: one to a young niece whose puppy was "out of control"; another to an friend whose four dogs were "overly rambunctious and competitive." Both recipients were thrilled to find how easily they could modify their pets' behavior--and improve their relationship with their dogs, as well---by following the author's easy-to-understand techniques. I suspect there are some "experienced trainers" out there who'll belittle Ms. Stevenson's approach, arguing that punishment and dominance are their most powerful training tools. All I can say is, "They're wrong!" If there's one thing I learned years ago, when I was a behavioral psych student in B.F. Skinner's lab at Harvard, it's that the best way to encourage desired behaviors is to reward them. Punishment, on the other hand, is merely confusing, because it insists that a unwanted behavior NOT be done, but without saying what should be done instead! I can't thank Ms. Stevenson enough for blending compassion with science in a book that dog owners of all ages will find incredibly helpful.

EVERYONE SHOULD OWN THIS BOOK, IF YOU OWN A DOG!

I am a huge animal rights activist. I love and care for all animals. I don't agree with some of these bad reviews at all! Whoever is writing bad about this book obviously doesn't have enough knowledge on the subject and knows little about what it takes to raise an animal or take care of one. This book, "The Right Way The First Time" and the author I completely support. She wrote a book that is easy to read and easy to learn from. If you are looking for a book to teach dogs of any age or breed, THIS IS THE BOOK YOU WANT! It helps you to understand you're dog, and what they need and teach them in a compassionate way. LISTEN, THIS BOOK KEEPS ANIMALS OUT OF SHELTERS, WHEN YOU TRAIN YOUR DOG TO BEHAVE THERE IS NO EXCUSE TO DROP THEM OFF AT THE LOCAL ASPCA OR SHELTER! By reading this book you're preventing animals of getting put to sleep or gassed INHUMAINLY! It's up to the owner to train you're dog properly. When a dog is mean, it's the owners fault, for not taking the time and having the patients to train them the right way. PEOPLE WILL WANT TO KEEP THERE DOGS AFTER FOLLOWING THE SIMPLE STEPS AND TIPS IN ALANA STEVENSON'S BOOK. They will have the best relationship with their animals after training them with the help of this AMAZING book. I love it, it helped me tremendously and I would, and have already,recommended it to pet owners that want to do it RIGHT THE FIRST TIME.

Great book-Extremely helpful...

Alana Stevenson has written a wonderful and insightful book which is full of compassion. I have had the pleasure of having Ms. Stevenson personally work with one of my dogs, and her tips worked fabulously. I was amazed at the changes she was able to make in my dog's behavior almost immediately. It is absolutely clear that dogs do not need punishment or negative reinforcements to stop unwelcome behaviors. Try these methods and see the results for yourselves! I can say that both through the personal lessons and reading the book, my puppy is becoming a wonderful, well-behaved dog. Excellent and Humane Guide Book...

I read this book at the Library, and thought it well worth purchasing. it is strongly endorsed by PETA and highly thought of by The Humane Society of The United States also, and I am a Member of both organizations. The principles contained in this book are well documented to be both kind to Animals and effective, and I highly recommend it to anyone who plans to have or has a Animal Companion. Wonderful Book

This is a wonderful book. I have been looking for a dog training book that is easy to follow, shows a thorough understanding of canine behavior and uses only positive reinforcement techniques. This book is it! It not only includes all of the above, it also includes a large dose of love, compassion and humor. You can tell that Alana Stevenson knows what she is doing and loves what she is doing. The language is simple and clear. I have learned so much about how dogs see the world which helps me actually enjoy training and not get so frustrated. And, best of all, the techniques work! I would recommend it to anyone.
