A landmark work of Native American literature, The Reservation offers a richly textured portrait of Tuscarora life in western New York during the 1940s and 50s. Drawing on personal memory, community stories, and the traditions of oral storytelling, Ted C. Williams weaves a series of interconnected narratives that bring to life the people, humor, hardships, and enduring spirit of the Tuscarora Nation. Through vivid characters and unforgettable anecdotes, Williams preserves the voices of a generation whose experiences might otherwise have been lost. Featuring the author's illustrations and a new introduction by Eric Gansworth, this classic volume remains an essential contribution to Native American literature.
I had the pleasure of working at a bookstore in Niagara Falls in 1976 when Ted Williams came to a book signing for this title. I just read the book recently (2000), because I was writing about the Tuscaroras and needed to learn more about their lives. Ted has preserved characters, legends, and numerous significant details of the lives of the Tuscarora. He regularly adds the Tuscaroran words where he can, which adds to the book's value. It's very readable, often funny. I'm not a Tuscarora myself, but I would recommend this title to anyone interested in learning more about them.
