In 1968 a group of assassins, known as the RAU (Republican Assassination Unit) murdered Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert Kennedy and forced President Lyndon Baines Johnson to resign. Then they went... This description may be from another edition of this product.
I agree with the other reviewers - could not put this book down! Mr. McDow's review is especially helpful with his broad understanding of the Constitution and the Democratic party, as well as the system of checks and balances under which our republic must operate.

Charles Whiten has written a Clancy-like thriller about American politics at it's less-than-most admirable hour - the 2000 elections pending and both parties running amok!Got the book at 5:00pm Saturday... finished Sunday at 9:00pm... could not put it down.Whiten does it all... spellbinding, and woven together like silk.Find a good friend who likes politics and get ready to gift him almost immediately with this book...
Whiten's The Republican Manifesto, a Delightful Discovery

Charles Whiten `66 and Pat Convoy `67 were separated by only one year at The Citadel and by even less in their ability to tell a captivating and compelling, although not quite believable, story. The major difference between John Grisham and Charles Whiten is that the former is a novelist who sometimes practices law while the later is a full time lawyer who has written a novel. Probably the greatest difference between Whiten on the one hand and Conroy and Grisham on the other is that Conroy and Grisham and have the best editors and publishers while Whiten had to do it alone with a self-published first novel. Conroy, whose first book was the excellent but little known The Boo, might identify with Whiten in this regard. Whiten uses an array of interesting characters to contrast Washington politics with the concerns of average citizens beyond the beltway. Many of these characters are thinly disguised public figures such as Bill and Hillary Clinton, Al Gore, and Rush Limbaugh. South Carolina readers have the added pleasure of identifying native characters such as Fritz Hollings who, as Senator Franklin Collins, is portrayed favorably but killed in Chapter One. Interestingly Whiten, who graduated from the pre-Shannon Faulkner Citadel, uses a strong but appealing feminine protagonist to connect the characters and save the Constitution. Neither major political party is spared Whiten's sharp criticism but the Democratic party reaps a few well crafted favorable observations. The characters are credible although the plot is sometimes weak, at least for those who do not find two or three conspiracies in every news story. These characters leave the reader with a practical understanding of the Constitutional provisions for a system of checks and balances as well as a strong two-party system. I enjoy Conroy over several weeks while Grisham keeps me awake late for two nights, three at the most. I decided to read the first chapter of Whiten's book at my office in the late afternoon and did not go home until I had finished it shortly after one o'clock the next morning. I regret having devoured such a delicious book in one sitting and now having to wait for a second to appear.
