Her Family, Her Home, Her Future--All Leveled in One Thunderous Explosion

When life seems weighed down by challenges, there are always pillars of enduring hope and love to be discovered.

Three days ago, Pearline Campbell's family was whole and Oliver Hamilton still loved her. But upon returning to Halifax disfigured and shellshocked, Oliver ended their relationship. Then came Thursday, December 6, 1917, when the Halifax harbor was leveled by a tremendous explosion...and Pearline fears nothing will ever be whole again. Her parents are dead, her brother is missing, and her sister refuses to speak. Pearline must fortify herself to open her home to needy orphans, including an unidentified baby. Where can she find the strength for each new day as misery grips the city?

Must Read Historical

Sadly this is book six and the final book in the Enduring Hope series by multiple authors with each giving us insight into tragedies that are not well known. I have enjoyed this series so very much as there is nothing more interesting to me than a historical account seamlessly told with fictional characters woven in with a Faith theme. This book does not disappoint as I fell in love with Pearline and her heart for orphans in the midst of loss and trying to locate her brother. It is a painful yet powerful account of the explosion in the harbor at Halifax during the same time as WWI and the repercussions from such devastating loss. Oliver returned home from the War with visible scars as well as mental scars but he still steps up and helps in any way he can. A well written story that draws you in from the first paragraph to the last sentence and you will not want it to be over. I found my eyes so teary at times I could not see the words. A book of courage, enduring loss, strength, faith, and second chances. I highly recommend reading this historical as I had never heard of this tragedy. It is well done and a must read in my opinion. I received a complimentary copy from CelebrateLit/Barbour Publishing. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.

Heartache and Heartfelt

5 stars, Heartache and Heartfelt THE RELUCTANT HEALER OF HALIFAX (Enduring Hope Book 6) by Terrie Todd I like this series of books. They always take a real event and weave an inspiring story around it. This is the tale of Pearline Campbell and her betrothed Sargent Oliver Hamilton. Oliver has just been injured in Europe in WW1, he arrives home to the local hospital and he has grave injuries. He doesn't want to burden Pearline, so he calls off their engagement. Pearline is heartbroken and shocked. She still loves Oliver and wants to help him, though her only way to help him now is to pray for him. An explosion in Halifax's harbor wreaks all sorts of havoc. The mostly able bodied soldiers get booted out of the hospital to help with the disaster. Pearline and her mother volunteer at an orphanage and Pearline plans to go help any way that she is able. There is a lot of heartbreak in this book, but there are also a lot of heartfelt moments. I enjoyed it. Highly recommended. Pearline is my favorite character.
