The Reign of Greed

The Reign of Greed is the English translation of José Rizal's novel *El Filibusterismo*, translated by Charles Derbyshire. The novel, originally written in Spanish and published in 1891, is a sequel to Rizal's earlier work, *Noli Me Tangere*. *El Filibusterismo* depicts the darker and more cynical side of the Filipino revolutionary struggle against Spanish colonial rule. The story follows Simoun, a wealthy jeweler who is revealed to be the revolutionary idealist Ibarra from *Noli Me Tangere*. Simoun seeks to incite a violent uprising to overthrow the oppressive colonial government and avenge the injustices suffered by the people.
