The Redemption of Saul: King Saul's Life as Parable

Through the Rock of Bozez and Sineh Many have been called out like Jonathan and his armor bearer to fight the Philistines and face life's trials with Christ alone, without Saul's guardianship. Like Jonathan we did not know that victory was assured, we knew Christ so little, and so formally: there was only a vague inkling that He would lead us to new heights and achievements. We did not tell our father (or the one who acted as such but was a mere encumbrance to our personal expression in Christ), and when we went out, the passageway was between two rocky crags, for such it assuredly felt to us impertinent little soldiers. On one side was the glittering light of our rock (which is the meaning of the word Bozez), and on the other was what they perceived - the thorny, dangerous rock (Sineh) which was their version of Christ, the one they feared and who was full of infinite vengeance. This one whom they believe will punish us for our extraction from their legalism and burdensome precepts, is yet the one whose very words we relied upon to see us through the difficulty and make our escape without being harmed. Our faith was severely tested, every advance forward was critical, and it was hard having only our armor-bearer to talk to, as his voice spoke now like the eagle overhead, clear and inspiriting, now like the small squeak of a mouse in a faraway shrub. Temptations of the world and its thorns came hotly upon us, temptations to doubt at times betrayed us, yet our heart continued to cry out, "Let us cross over; it may be the Lord will work for us." The armor-bearers reply bears a comforting thought: "Do all you have in mind, I am with you heart and soul." (1 Samuel 14:7) Approaching the armed garrison, with weapons drawn, using his hands and feet, symbolizing prayer, Jonathan and his armor-bearer climbed up and utterly routed the Philistines. An unprecedented victory was achieved, one in which their enemies were thrown into a panic. Some translations go as far as to claim there was an earth-quake. It is true for us as well, all our testings in this life are great earth quakes, as the tectonic plates of our lives shift beneath us, one against the other, and all that is of our earth moves, groans, and is bent into a different shape than it was formerly.
