Teased by bullies about her broken-down bike, Nona sets her sights on a Deluxe Red Racer. But her parents won't buy her a new bike when she still has her old one. Nona is suddenly tempted by a "wicked... This description may be from another edition of this product.
The Red Racer was used at a long ago writing workship as a wonderful example of an Imaginative Narrative writing. The teachers loved this book because of its simplicity and the way the kids "get" the plot and trials of Nona. For years, I've looked for this book as it is out of print. The cheapest I had found was $40ish, until now. I was so grateful to finally find a more reasonably-priced book to add to our school's collection. The kids and teachers love it!

I love this book! As an African-American mother with 3 daughters I can really appreciate the illustrations of Nona's thick braids. Nona struggles with honesty after being ridiculed by the neighborhood kids. In other words, Nona tries to destroy her old ugly bike after the neighborhood bullies tease her. Nona thinks if her old bike is lost, or destroyed, then her parents will be forced to buy her the new Red Racer in the bike store window. Unfortunately, this great book is out of print. If you want to read it you will have to visit your local library, and if they don't have it, ask them to get it for you via Inter-Library Loan (ILL) and they will probably get it for you in a few days or weeks. It's worth the wait. I've written the publisher about getting The Red Racer re-printed, but have received no response. If you have any ideas on how to get this book, and other out-of-print books, re-printed, please e-mail me at bransford5@yahoo.com Thanks!
Red Racer Entertains and Educates

Children will relate to the storyline of wanting something so bad they'd do almost anything to get it. The moral of the story is that sometimes anything might be too much! The illustrations are wonderful and the storyline is entertaining and educational. I highly recommend this title for elementary age children.
