A retired war hero is found murdered on the front lawn of his property. Cawley Jenkins, a disabled vet, and owner of the local paper investigates the crime at the request of his friend, the chief of police. The D.A. steps in and takes the investigation away from them. It's a tight election year, and the D.A. gives the investigation to the sheriff, who is also up for reelection. The widow is charged with first-degree murder, and Cawley knows she has been charged so the D.A. could conduct a showy murder trial just before the election. Cawley and his wife, Jody use their newspaper to shed light on the blatantly political move by the incumbent D.A. and the Sheriff. Cawley is asked to use his special knowledge of weapons to help the widow in her defense.
