Important History—Though DeSantis Wouldn’t Like It

Since Mary Trump is DJT’s niece, I expected this book would be a sequel to her previous book, which concentrated on him and their family. Instead, this book barely mentions him. What it IS about details the history of the conditions and treatment of black peoples in this country. Yeah, I was aware of general elements of this history, but reading The Reckoning showed me how my own education had been limited to the outlines, and that was a disservice to them and to me. Yes, it is disturbing, but gaining a deeper understanding of this ongoing history is far more important than the distress it can generate. Shielding the white population from recognizing our role in the mistreatment of nonwhite peoples—going all the way back to Europeans’ abuse of indigenous peoples when they colonized this land shortchanges all of us.
