Yang Wanli 杨万里 (1127-1206), courtesy name Yanxiu 延秀, style name Chengzhai 诚斋, was a famous literati and prominent politician in Southern Song. From the 12th to the 13th century he served four Southern Song emperors. Yang Wanli, You Mao 尤袤, Lu You 陆游, and Fan Chengda 范成大 were known as "The Four Prominent Poets of the Reviving Period" 中兴四大诗人 in the history of Chinese literature. Profoundly drawn to Zen Buddhism, Yang Wanli developed a distinctive style for poetic composition named the Chengzhai School, a quick sketch of daily occasions enlivened with poetic, graphic, whimsical charms. This style is unique for its uncontrived prose-like casualty. It is easy to grasp the image which naturally leads to a deeper metaphysical understanding. The publication is an analytical translation on a set of poems collected under the title of Boating In Appreciation of Flowers 《大司成颜几圣率同舍招游裴园泛舟绕孤山赏荷花晚泊玉壶得十绝句》. The set of ten quatrains was written during an outing on the West Lake in 1185. In this collection, the use of lotus flowers as a penetrating motif was characteristic of the masterful renderings of Chengzhai School.
