The Reality of Free Will: A Case for the Genuineness of Freedom

The most familiar of experiences is of the conscious self. And it is of the conscious self as a free determinant; it is an entity that consciously decides what it will do.

And the experience is that the freedom that is experienced is authentic in a sense that it is true freedom. The experience is that freedom is as real as other real things.

Some, though, distrusting their own experiences, believe that the experience of freedom is an illusion, and that unconscious influences determine conscious choices.

In issue then is the authenticity of the conscious self. In experiencing freedom, does a person experience freedom that is as real as a person experiences it to be?

And the issue can be resolved. All that is necessary is to consider the conscious self and other evidence of its authenticity. It is truly as authentic as it seems to be.

It is necessary though to consider the issue of whether people are free as the issue it truly is, though. Only in a rational light can a person see that he is truly free.
