Founded by Adam Weishaupt, a professor of canon law, the organization was born out of a desire for intellectual freedom and the promotion of Enlightenment values. Weishaupt intended the Illuminati to be a society of enlightened thinkers who could challenge the established order, particularly the influence of the church and the autocratic state. This militant rationalism sought to encourage moral and philosophical development among its members, while advocating for reason over superstition.
