The Raven

"The Raven" by Charles Dada is a fascinating espionage thriller. It's a gripping story set in 2014 Moscow, right in the middle of Putin's secret invasion of Crimea. It's a novel that blends real historical events with fictional characters, weaving together international intrigue, romance, and suspense. At the heart of it is Rachel Jones, an English mathematician turned M16 spy, whose story really brings out the human side of espionage.

Rachel is quite an interesting character. She's from the Lake District in England, a bright independent woman with a Ph.D. in Mathematics. She's also a chess player and fluent in Russian, which makes her a pefect fit for M16's needs. The setting of the novel is vivid - the cold, snowy streets of Moscow, the cultural institutions, and the shadowy world of spies. Rachel's official cover is teaching at the Moscow Academy, educating the children of diplomats, but her real mission is to uncover Putin's intentions in Ukraine.

The novel really captures the murky world of intelligence, where misinformation and double-crosses are the norm. Rachel's mission intensifies when she discovers suspicious military convoys near the Ukranian border, possibly setting up a nuclear provocation to justify a Russian invasion.

But alongside the political intrigue, the novel explores her complicated personal life. She's involved with several men, each relationship layered with tension and betrayal. There's Jakovitch Simovitch, a Russian architect and chess enthusiast who's drawn to Rachel, but struggles with her independence. Then Peter Lewinski, an art teacher and womaniser, who's involved with Rachel, but also with other women. Tanya Lewinski, Peter's pregnant wife, is emotionally torn and eventually finds some solace with Jak. Then there's Dmitri, the Greek agent, who becomes Rachel's new partner and helps her in her spy work.

Chess is a recurring motif throughout the novel. Rachel and Jak bond over the game, with Rachel often beating Jak, which highlights her intellectual edge and control. But she is fascinated by Jak's mathematical and graphical analysis of the game, and briefly allows him to become more intimate with him. But her world is shattered when she discovers, clandestinely, that an old girl-friend of his, Cleo, is staying at his flat on a fleeting visit through Moscow. This signals the end of their relationship, but she still uses him to further her espionage, to Jak's utter frustration and misunderstanding.

These love triangles and betrayels add a lot of emotional depth to the story. Rachel's insistence on independence and control over her relationships reflect her feminist ideals, but also cause friction, especially with Jak. His reflections on their relationship are fascinating. He thinks about Jungian concepts like anima and animus - the inner feminine and masculine - and how both he and Rachel are intellectual introverts, afraid to show emotions, which leads to misunderstandings. That psychological insight adds a layer of complexity. It's not just a spy thriller; it's a story about human vulnerability, trust, and the emotional cost of living a double life.

The political backdrop is crucial. The novel iis set during the real events of 2014 - Putin's secret invasion of Crimea. It explores how Western intelligence failed to anticipate the invasion, possibly due to misinformation and espionage. One wonders why the United Kingdom did not have better intelligence of the situation. Perhaps this explains why

Peter Lewinski is exposed as a traitor and arrested by the FSB, the Russina security service. Rachel manages to escape Moscow with Dmitri, leaving behind the dangerous world she inhabited. Tanya, pregnant and abandoned by Peter, finds support in Jak, but their relationship remains complicated, especially when Peter is released as a double-agent. Jak is left heartbroken and dissillusioned, reflecting on lost love and the harsh realities of
