Jimmy Viceno is a broke comic book artist who created Rat Boy, a hard-boiled rodent detective who won't leave him alone. Jimmy knows Rat Boy isn't real, but that doesn't stop them from arguing.

When money runs out, Jimmy takes a job washing dishes at a local Italian restaurant. What he doesn't know is that the place is a mafia front, and everyone around him is convinced he's somebody important: the boss's nephew, sent undercover to spy on the operation. The FBI reaches the same conclusion, and soon the Chicago boss sends an enforcer to find out who Jimmy really is.

Jimmy notices none of it. He's thinking about panel transitions. Rat Boy, on the other hand, notices everything. He's the only detective on the case.
