Without doubt the two novels in this collection are two of the best Zane Grey ever wrote. The only thing which could have made this book better is if they had combined The Rainbow Trail with Riders of the Purple Sage and The Vanishing American with the U.P. Trail; otherwise this is a great book to own to complete any set of Harper mass market paperbacks published in the 1990's. Both of these stories are timeless creations by the master of western romance, or to be more accurate historical romance set in the West. In the Rainbow Trail you learn the fate of Jim Lassiter and Jane Withersteen trapped in Surprise Valley, and meet a new character John Shefford you can readily identify with. The Vanishing American is the Indian's story, and Zane Grey used Jim Thorpe as the model for his lead, Nophaie, a college athlete, well educated. This is Zane Grey's tribute to the American Indian and shows his compassion and heart ache for them, as he tells the story of the disappearance of them as civilization encroaches upon them, especially the dasdardly men who take advantage. I first read Vanishing American when I was in high school and have grown to appreciate it more and more as the years have passed and I rank it with the best Zane Grey works. This book a fine addition to any Zane Grey collection.
