During the course of their evening together, Michael and Cassie examine their mutual past and the intense sexual attraction they still feel for each other. Ultimately the reader will learn of the horrible incident that lead to the parting of these two, a brutal confrontation that both have attempted to keep buried through all the years of their separation.In the early morning when Michael finally leaves, the two protagonists are profoundly changed. Michael is ready to accept the inescapable fact of his impending death and Cassie is finally able to come to terms the emptiness she has been experiencing all her adult life.
