Book Overview

"The Quest" is a travel and historical fiction adventure story, set in the 1950's about a teenager whose father was proclaimed Missing in Action in Korea and posthumously awarded the Silver Star for bravery. After losing his father and finding himself homeless the highly resourceful teenager then lives in the Arizona desert, and later shines shoes in Chicago. When he learns an evil step father's plans to sell him into slavery, he stows away on a ship, panhandles in France, and then slips across the Iron Curtain Russian border to help set up a secret network delivering much needed medical supplies to Gypsies, all while wanting to return to his girlfriend in Rattle Snake Cove, Alabama. Excitement, travel, and history throughout the book as Danny struggles to take control of his life.Excerpts I felt a sharp pain in my side and heard a command to get up hissing in my ear. I smelled the stale smell of smoke and beer and realized that Buford was kicking at me with the toe of his boot. "Get up, boy, and don't make no noise. Get in the back of that truck outside and don't turn on no lights.".......Hiding from evil people at a Gypsy camp in Marseille France, Danny asked the Gypsy leader, "Are we safe here? If we're caught we'll be sold as slaves, if they don't kill us. I have no passport. But I do have a few American dollars. What do we need to do?......After crossing the Russian border through the dense forest Danny heard the rumble of a large truck. He could see it approaching from a distance. It stopped directly in front of Danny's hiding place. A bunch of Russian soldiers got out of the back and all started towards the trees carrying their weapons. Danny made himself as small as possible and froze, being afraid to even breathe. ......This powerful book tells the story of so young people struggling to take control of their lives in a hard and cruel world; families of Missing in Action Soldiers; Gypsies; living behind the Russian Iron Curtain and a place called Korea.. This is the way it was in the 1950's. Col James Henderson, U.S. Army Retired This is the first of three books based on the main characters.
