In the heart of ancient Persia, the empire's Jewish citizens face an ominous edict that threatens their very existence. Roxannah, the daughter of a once-privileged but now impoverished Persian lord, is devastated by the news. Her father sees this edict as a stroke of good fortune, an opportunity to settle his mounting debts by killing the Jewish physician, Adin, and seizing his belongings, but instead he meets his own untimely end, leaving Roxannah destitute and adrift. Desperate and determined to support her mother while settling the debt, Roxannah approaches Adin--the man whose kind eyes still haunt her--to help her find employment in Queen Esther's kitchens.
In the opulent palace of Susa, Roxannah strives to overcome prejudice and adversity as she ascends through the ranks in the royal kitchen. Her culinary talent earns her the trust and mentorship of Queen Esther herself, a woman of grace and wisdom, who is navigating treacherous palace politics and whispers of her inability to produce an heir after six years of marriage. Amid this unfolding connection, Roxannah and Adin uncover a sinister plot against Amestris, the king's most powerful wife and Esther's archenemy. As secrets unravel and alliances are tested, the fate of Amestris and Esther's reign hang in the balance.
An immersive novel that brings Queen Esther's Court to life through the eyes of a talented cook, kind physician, and the queen herself.
Beautifully written, compelling, with characters that captured my heart. Roxannah grew up hiding in the shadow of her father's cruel ways, but her talent for flavor may be her family's only hope after her father leaves them destitute. I admired her determination, and her loyalty, as she works to prove her self in the royal kitchens. I especially liked her gentle natured way if winning others with honesty and kindness.
A richly woven novel with evocative descriptions and an attention to detail that bring the story to life. I loved how the novel was told in the midst of things, as well as from memory looking back, which added a depth of personality to the storytelling, and a unique touch. I loved the fresh take on one of the Old Testament's most beloved stories, as the author draws from extensive research, and historical details to vibrantly bring the court to life. I enjoyed the themes of standing up to your enemies in the face of opposition, something that sounds good, but in reality is much harder to practice!
Overall, a riveting and compelling tale that will grab you by the heartstrings, and have you hanging on to find out what happens next, as Queen Esther's story is told through fresh eyes, with enduring themes of forgiveness, faith, and facing your fears.

Captivating Biblical Fiction
Published by Anne Rightler , 1 year ago
The Queen's Cook is another captivating Biblical fiction story from award-winning storyteller, Tessa Afshar. Her stories are fascinating, and rich with detail that take readers right into the scenes of Scripture and the culture of the people. Readers will love this fictional account of a young woman of ancient Persia, Roxannah. From a young age, she has dreamed of cooking for kings and queens. Through a series of events, her dream is realized. A fulfilled dream, though, is not all that Roxannah experiences--mysteries to solve, acceptance, love, and the realization that the God of the Jews loves her too. The characters have depth and reality. Their emotions and strengths resonate well with readers. Throughout the story there is a strong thread of faith in the God Who Sees and is at work in difficult situations, extending grace and mercy and changing lives. For readers who enjoy Biblical fiction, The Queen's Cook is a must-read. I am excited to see this is the first book in a new series by Ms. Afshar, Queen Esther's Court.

Biblical fiction at its finest

"But sometimes the doors that open before us are not the ones we long for."
With impeccable research and masterfully woven words, Tessa Afshar once again transports us into the pages of the Bible - this time to Persia ruled by Xerxes. This story is laid out a little differently from the other books I've read by the author. The first person voice belongs to Esther and her diary-like words many years after Xerxes' rule are fascinating, wise, and humorous. Roxannah and Adin have third person voices during the reign of Xerxes and Esther. Their story follows the citizens of Susa's reaction to Xerxes' terrible decree and the melee that ensues but this is just a small portion of their journey. Roxannah finds herself in Queen Esther's kitchen as a cook and the beautiful tale of forgiveness, faith, trust, and realization of dreams unfolds from the kitchen. I loved learning about the spices and types of food that likely existed during Esther's Persia.
And the characters! Watching Roxannah grow a backbone and step into the path God prepared for her was delightful. Adin offered steadfast, godly, patient friendship and his honorable character was a gem. Roxannah and Esther's friendship was sweet. The dangerous palace intrigue that catches Roxannah and Adin unaware was suspenseful and exciting, even if it was purely fictional and not based on Biblical or historical information.
I can't wait for the next book in the series! Tessa Afshar has a gift of bringing the pages of the Bible to life in vivid color, complete with tastes, smells, and sounds. Every time I read her book, I live in the shoes of the characters and am richly rewarded - spiritually, emotionally, and intellectually - for having done so.
