What happens when you can explain what you should do-but still cannot do it?
The Quartite Meta-Conative Matrix Encyclopedia is a comprehensive reference guide to a practical framework for understanding how body, feeling, thought, and will work together in the moments that shape human action.
Developed by educator, counselor, and school leader Duane Sharrock through more than two decades of practice, the Quartite Meta-Conative Matrix (QMCM) begins with a deceptively simple premise: knowing is only one part of human functioning. What we sense, what we feel, what we think, and what we are prepared to do can align-or pull in very different directions.
The Encyclopedia maps these four dimensions as interconnected pistons:
Sensorimotor - Body
The physical signals, sensations, posture, movement, and embodied information present in a moment.
Affective - Feeling
Emotion, mood, value, salience, connection, and the felt significance of experience.
Cognitive - Thought
Attention, interpretation, memory, language, reasoning, imagination, and meaning-making.
Engaged-Conative - Will
Intention, choice, initiation, effort, persistence, and follow-through-the movement from possibility toward action.
But identifying the four pistons is only the beginning.
The Encyclopedia shows how they interact through a sixteen-cell matrix, then examines those interactions through three essential capacities-Awareness, Regulation, and Integration. It adds the rhetorical lenses of Logos, Pathos, and Ethos and four moderator gauges-Stress, Support, Beliefs, and Environment-to explain why the same person may function very differently across situations.
At the center of the book is MRRT 2.0, a structured method for reading difficult moments without reducing people to labels. Its streamlined companion, MRRT-Lite, brings the framework into coaching conversations, classrooms, teams, supervision, reflection, and everyday practice.
Rather than asking only, What is wrong? or What should this person know?, the framework encourages more useful questions:
Which piston is loud? Which is quiet? What is acting on what? What is the environment making easier or harder? And what is one piece of the steering wheel that can actually be turned?
Designed as a book to consult as well as read, the Encyclopedia includes definitions, conceptual models, worked examples, practice applications, facilitator guidance, cross-references, visual diagrams, a comprehensive glossary, scholarly references, and a professional index.
For educators, counselors, coaches, leaders, facilitators, helping professionals, and reflective practitioners, The Quartite Meta-Conative Matrix Encyclopedia offers a language for seeing human functioning with greater precision-without losing sight of the person inside the model.
