Book Overview

You were not meant to walk alone. Many of us struggle to forge deep relationships with God and other people. Modern society has isolated us as rugged individuals, deceiving us into thinking we can make it through life on our own. Individualism has likewise shaped the pattern of Christian discipleship, privatizing faith and separating us from fellow believers. But we come to know God best when others help us on the way. And our friendships develop...

Very insightful

I really loved this book. As someone who has felt the failure of not having deeper meaningful friendships in life, I now understand more of why. Richard has given me many useful techniques for what I can do to build deeper, fruitful relationships. Richard shares from his personal history, his friends and many biblical examples to explore the facets of relationship with God, for God and through God with others. I recommend this book to any person wanting to grow in their friendships as well as to churchs wanting to build community.

An important book for Christian living

It seems there is an increasing lack of authentic friendships in our society today. Life is so fast and so filled, that we don't take the time to develop meaningful friendships. In this important book, the author argues the case for the necessity of friendships to a Christian life well-lived. Along the way, the author uses personal stories and scripture to present valuable lessons in both the "why" and "how" of friendships. Whether you are a member of a small group, ministry team, church, or none of the above, you will benefit from this book.

wonderful book

I probably shouldn't be writing this review, since i'm in the middle of the book right now, but I have to say it's been one of the more influential books I've read so far. If you are planning to go into ministry, especially, I would read this book. It has been invaluable in motivating, encouraging and exhorting me to move past superficial relationships with my friends and the youth i minister to, and to really pursue a deepening, God-pursuing relationship with them. The scriptures are really relevant and the examples are pretty realistic and applicable. Definately read this book.

"Four things stand out for me in this book. One, Rich has terrific insights into the various Scriptures, which form the basis for findings in each chapter. Two, Rich has real-life illustrations liberally sprinkled throughout his flow of input. He is very observant in life and has experienced the things he writes about. Three, Rich has a passion about interdependence in the body. He also uses tables and diagrams to help break up narrative and summarize findings. And finally, the book is very browsable. Any chapter can be read with profit apart from reading the whole of the book. My favorite chapter was chapter ten, 'Reconciliation and Forgiveness Among Friends.' The insights into Abigail were outstanding. It is clear that Rich is modeling for us throughout the whole book. He is himself one who is in the 'pursuit of God in the company of friends.' "Dr. J.
