The Puritans and their Principles, by Edwin Hall, is a series of lectures delivered to the First Congregational Society of Norwalk, Connecticut. The lectures, from 1843 and early 1844, set forth the causes which brought the Pilgrims to the New World. This text also exhibits Puritan principles and shows the cost of maintaining such a moral stricture. The fundamental principles of the Puritanic system of church polity, based broadly and solidly on the Word of God, are contrasted with the Prelatic. To better understand what the Puritans endured and accomplished, Hall recounts their history and times, exhibits their sufferings, and traces them in their wanderings until they arrive upon the, then desolate, shores of New England.
