Splendid!

This is a wonderful book for those with an interest in almost any aspect of the psalter. It is practically 3 books in one. The first discusses the development, writing and eventual canonization of the psalms. The second discusses the historical use of the psalms by Jews, Catholics and Protestants. The third discusses modern uses and the theological underpinnings of those uses. It is a wonderful resource. It is written on a level that any competent adult should be able to understand. Background material is given in sufficient abundance that the reader is not left wondering about the context of statements made. Assertions are backed up with concrete examples. The author knows his material. He was an ordained Protestant pastor who later converted to Roman Catholicism. He has worked as an actual translator of biblical materials and knows the language and linguistic nuances of the psalms. He communicates the shifts in understandings and presents alternate readings. In summation, this is a first rate work accessible by anyone.
