delightful fantasy!

Dave Brown knows how to tell a tale simply. Yet this wonderfully descriptive book will simply make you want to read more from the author. It is a delightful escape and it could easily be gobbled up during one enjoyable sitting. The characters are engaging. They are also inspiring affirmations of what gay men can be. [...] As for "The Protectors," I enjoyed the trip almost as much as my trip to the land of Oz. The other good news is that his other books in the series are just as good! You'll want to buy them all. The lovable cowboys experience the terrors of the modern world

In The Protectors, book II of the Legend of the Golden Feather, lovable cowboys Jake and Wiley are discovered by two young men, Jim and Dave; the date June 1993. Jim and Dave have been together for around five years, and having come into an inheritance are about to set up a new life for themselves in their self-built cabin on the rock above where Jake and Wiley built their cabin in 1886. When they discover Jake and Wiley lying in the rubble of the original cabin they immediately come to their aid; and so begins a series of new adventures which now involves all four men. It is not long before Jake and Wiley, along with their new companions, are being eagerly pursued. The pursuers include a wealthy woman who lusts after them, a greedy and viscous dealer after their 1886 gold dollar coins, and a wasted loser seeking revenge, not to mention the law enforcement agencies. How can Jim and Dave, the Protectors, help them through this, and will Jake and Wiley be able to return to 1886? Things are of course complicated as Jake and Wiley accustom themselves to the strange world of 1996. Their reactions are delightful and enlightening; while they are amazed, at times terrified and even horrified at what they see, their individual responses are particularly interesting. Jake in his naïve innocence, his habit of saying exactly what he thinks, puts into words what many of us are perhaps too afraid to admit about our modern age. The educated Wiley, while equally appalled at the state of the world, has a more enquiring approach, and would love to know how everything works. Every bit as funny as Bristlecone Peak, Jake's reactions to 1993 especially providing much hilarity, I found The Protectors a most enjoyable read. We see the developing relationship between the two partners and blood brothers strengthen further, and we begin to learn something of the power of the Golden Feather. In addition to the humour, Jake and Wiley's response to the modern world provides some serious food for thought. While we enjoy all the benefits and comforts of the technological and scientific advancement, we are provoked to question whether our lives really are any better for it.

Seeing the world with Jakes eyes

When I write this I am still in the middle of this second book in the "Legend of the golden feather" series from Dave Brown, with its prequel "Bristlecone Peak" and the third book "Home to Kentucky", but I could not bear not to talk about it now. After being in danger to lost their lifes Jake and Wiley time-travel with the help of the 'golden feather' into year 1993 to meet there two other hunky gay men who help to rescue wounded Wileys life.Again the author created more wonderfully drawn characters and the pleasant, loving atmosphere that surrounded the lovers Jak and Wiley and everyone around. With these two around you feel sure everything they will have to face will end well - that feeling I like especially in the book. And I also love the warm humour so generously spread in here. I can't count the times when I spontaneously break in laughter after reading Jake's comments about the world of 1993. And it was very interesting to look at our daily life with the eyes of a man from the past. The author did a very well job creating this wonderful moments, this wonderful book. I can't wait to read also the third in the series and I really recommend these books with emphasis to everyone who like gay romance, gay friendship and a gorgeous gay couple.

Those Thrilling Days of Yesteryear, Part 2

Reviewer Gary Arbach is right! The Protectors is Book Two in Dave Brown's "Legend of the Golden Feather" series. A rip-roarin' tribute to the Old West with a modern day allegory. For an introduction to the series, see my review for Book One, "Bristlecone Peak."

Review of The Protectors, A Novel by Dave Brown

The Protectors is the 2nd book of a wonderful trilogy set in 1886 Colorado. They tell of the adventures of Jake Brady, a big, blond mountain of a farm boy from Kentucky, and his partner, Wiley Deluce, the college educated, bearded, hairy chested stud from Philadelphia. While the first book introduced us to Jake and Wiley, this 2nd book flashes our heroes 107 years into the future. They fall under the protection of Jim and Dave, two mountain men wannabes from Denver, hense the book's title. The book recounts the adventures of all four men. This book is fairly simplistic in narrative and the description of Jake and Wiley is beyond anything put out by Colt. But if you dwell on that, you've missed the point. Look into the deeper recesses of your local book store for War and Peace or a marked-down copy of the Dead Sea Scrolls, if you're so inclined. Just let yourself go and picture these guys (can you say Carl Hardwick? is a good first pass) in a knockout romp in today's sometimes bizzare society. Hello? Enjoy it! It's fun!
