The Prostitutes of Post Office Street

Post Office Street drops its readers into the red-light district of Galveston, where crooked cops and down-on-their-luck prostitutes dwell. Yet, in this seedy part of town, Carden paints a picture of hope as his main characters seek to break free from the ruts that their lives have fallen into.

Prostitutes of Post Office Street

I started reading this book and couldn't put it down until I finished it. Carden really knows how to make the characters come to life.I found myself really caring about the characters in this book as if they were people I know. This book left me wanting for more. I would like to know what happens to Billy, Connie, Meg, Tommy and Colby. I was particularly drawn to the character of Donald Higgins. His emotional turmoil touched me because I think everyone has experienced an inner struggle with trying to find out who they truly are. I think most people create an outer self that they portray for the world to see but we often bury our true selves deep inside us. I look forward to a sequel.

A Different World

This is a book about a largely-ignored subject, the human qualities and private lives and loves of four women in a particular house of prostitution. In beautifully sparse prose, the author takes us into the story of his characters, making us privy to their backgrounds, their ways of dealng with the rejection of society, their dreams, and especially their tecniques for keeping real feellngs separate from the services they provide. We learn a little about the customers and some of the more unusual reasons they have for seeking sex in this way -- their loneliness, their own feelings of rejection, and sometimes their quest for real love and companionship. This is a book that communicates through the conversation of the characters. There is no preaching, and descriptions are brief. It tells a fast, absorbing story, one you will read in a few hours, but will not forget.
