A helpful and easy introduction to ethics in technology
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 17 years ago
This is a small text about 150 pages in length. The author has quite a casual style which is easy to follow and keeps the pages turning on what could potentially be a dry subject. Sharpe opens the book with a well-balanced "introduction to the principles of ethics", which describes the difference between ethics, morals, and personal beliefs. The book then focuses on specific issues within the IT community with chapters on Respect for Intellectual Property, Respect for Privacy, Fair Representation, and Nonmaleficence. The book closes with an appendix of case studies that students and tutors alike will likely find helpful. My overall impression as a newcomer to this subject was positive. I found it easy to read and understand. It is fairly limited in scope though, and for a more thorough investigation of the subject I recommend Cyberethics by Robert M. Baird, Regan Ramsower, and Stuart E. Rosenbaum.
Emphasis On Ethics
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 24 years ago
Richard J. Severson's "The Principals Of Information Ethics"was first published about 5 years ago but is still very relevant. It is written in a casual style, and is an easy read. The emphasis is on ethics, which, according to Severson, lie somewhere between our morals and the things for which we are applying morals to. It does contain some of the author's opinions, but is mostly objective.
