The beautiful and young Princess Elianor is orphaned and the royal councillors plan to marry her to the old and ugly Prince Norris. In an attempt to prevent the wedding, Elianor insists that three beautiful dresses and a rainbow coat be made first. It is her belief that such tasks are impossible; hence the wedding will not take place. Unfortunately, all four garments are made very quickly and they are everything she wanted them to be. The dresses are so fine that each will fit inside a walnut shell. Rather than marry Prince Norris, Elianor puts all three dresses in walnut shells and with her rainbow coat about her, flees her kingdom. Eventually she tires and falls asleep in a hollow tree. A royal hunting party let by a young and handsome king discover her and take her back to his kingdom. Fearful that she will be forced to go back and marry Prince Norris, Elianor feigns the lack of speech, so she is put to work in the king's kitchen. She works in the kitchen until the king gives a grand ball. She dons one of her dresses and puts on a mask and joins the dancing, catching the eye of the king and all other males in attendance. Elianor manages to flee the ball before her true identity is discovered and when the king gives a second ball, she dons the second dress and the same thing happens. Finally, when the king gives a third ball, her identity is revealed and Elianor marries the king. The illustrations in this book are excellent, providing a backdrop to the text that will catch and hold the eyes of the reader. While the Cinderella tale is an old one and has appeared in many forms, quality writers can still create modifications that enchant young readers. Waters is such a writer.
