The Princely State of Jammu & Kashmir
The Princely State of Jammu & Kashmir" by Qazi Mumtaz Hussain is a meticulously researched historical account exploring the political, cultural, and socio-economic evolution of one of South Asia's most strategically significant regions. From its prehistoric settlements and early dynastic eras to the pivotal Treaty of Amritsar in 1846, this book charts the formation of Jammu & Kashmir as a unified princely state under the Dogra Dynasty. Hussain examines the diverse geography of the region-spanning the fertile plains of Jammu, the lush Kashmir Valley, the high-altitude deserts of Ladakh, and the mountainous territories of Gilgit-Baltistan-highlighting its economic, military, and geopolitical significance over centuries. The work delves into the governance, legal frameworks, and socio-cultural structures established by the Maharajas, the influence of British suzerainty, and the role of local communities. Detailed analysis of historical events, border expansions, trade routes, and natural resource management provides insight into the complexities of regional power, strategic diplomacy, and cultural integration. Hussain also explores the interactions between Hindu, Buddhist, and Muslim populations, the impact of taxation, land reforms, and socio-religious dynamics under Dogra rule, and the controversies surrounding economic exploitation and political authority. The book concludes with a critical examination of Jammu & Kashmir's role during India's Partition, international relations, and the legacy of its princely governance in shaping modern geopolitical disputes. Accessible yet scholarly, this volume serves both as a comprehensive resource for historians and an engaging narrative for general readers, offering a nuanced perspective on the historical roots and enduring significance of Jammu & Kashmir in South Asia.
