Young Toby's uncontrollable dream music filled the Arctic sea with a thundering music the other whales feared would draw the dreaded human whale hunters. Banished from the safety of the pod, Toby is set on a quest for his true voice--and to save Earth from a dark creature who hated everything.
It's been years since I read this book, but I've never forgotten it. Most books I read tend to be forgotten as I read other books, but I remember this book so strongly because it almost made me cry. It's also surreal and New Age, what with talking animals and astral planes, but it's a beautiful book. Although primarily a children's book, it's more than a great read for an adult. There's nothing else to be said, except to please read the book.

I have a personal interest in The Prince of Whales and over the years since it was first published , it always seemed to have a positive influence on the thousands of readers who have enjoyed it. I am fairly biased being R.L.'s mother but I must use this letter to thank Billy Gilman for naming The Prince of Whales as his all time (so far) favorite book in a recent 20 question interview with CMT. I am so happy that he enjoyed reading it - but his enjoyment couldn't equal our joy in listening to him sing Mattie's Heart Songs. All the best to Billy and Mattie
A Wonderful Eco-Tale!

A lovely tale about Toby the whale as he seeks his pod and takes the reader on an undersea adventure that is marvelously imagined and fun to read. It is also guaranteed to stimulate an ecological interest in most readers and a concern for the survial of endangered whales. If you love this kind of book like I do, I would also recommend the recently published eco-novel, ACCUSED BY FACET-EYES (author C.B. Don), since it takes the reader into another world within our own...that of the fantastic Magi honeybee beings and the plight of the endangered honeybee pollinators. Both books are thought-provoking and a journey into a realm not usually talked about or visualized by us humans!
Toby's adventures alone in the open sea

Toby lives in a pod with his fellow whales but he sings in his sleep! That could endanger the whole pod by waking up the whaling ships, and that could mean big problems. He does come along on the migration route, but has to stay 100 yards away at all times. But soon he's lost! And worst of all, unable to find his pod.
one of my favorites from childhood

I read this book quite a few years ago during grade school, and though I have a difficult time recalling anything else I read from that time period, this one stands out in my mind. I stayed up all night to finish and I remember crying during some of the more poignant scenes. It has a great ecological message and is written beautifully.
