Jake and Scarlett are back in Book 3 of the Shepherd & Associates Series. In The Price of Murder they travel to the NE coast of Florida to investigate the theft of multi-million-dollar masterpiece art from an ocean front home. In the course of the robbery, the wife, an oil heiress, is murdered and her five-year-old daughter is traumatized. While the first impression suggests it was a home invasion gone wrong, Jake doesn't accept the obvious and takes a deep dive into the case. Along the way, he and Scarlett team up with local law enforcement and FBI agents to unravel a set of complex facts. When additional bodies begin to fall, the puzzle grows. Who will be next? Could the husband have been responsible, despite his airtight alibi? Was a larger criminal element at work? Or could it have been a case of fatal attraction?
As the couple become immersed in the case, Scarlett catches the eye of a local detective while Jake garners female attention from unlikely sources. However, despite Scarlett's continued denial of a personal relationship with Jake, they end up sharing a hotel room.
