The couple travels back to Stockton, California, where Michael hires his little buddy, Alice Benson, from the Public Defender's Office who has taken a position in the District Attorney's office as Dewey Gunnert's personal assistant. Benson is to handle the couple's affairs in the States, working under Regina's sister Rosie, who is handling the rest of their business affairs.

It turns out that they have one right under their nose-Frankie Sanchez, the old Public Defender investigator who now works for the District Attorney's Office. A trained sniper and demolition expert from Vietnam, he's brought in to examine the evidence.
