The Preacher's Kid

It was in biology class that things started to change for Sam. Mr. Hargrove, the lanky, perpetually curious teacher who always wore bow ties, had noticed Sam's ability.

"Mitchell," he said one day, after the rest of the students had filed out, "can I ask you something?"

Sam hesitated, glancing at the door. "Sure."

"You're observant, aren't you? Always watching, always listening."

Sam blinked. "I guess so. Why?"

Mr. Hargrove smiled, pulling a chair around to sit across from him. "I've seen the way you notice things. Like when Jessica couldn't figure out the microscope last week-you helped her before she even asked. Or when you told me Daniel was struggling with the lab. You seem to know what people need before they say it."

Sam shrugged, uncomfortable under the attention. "I don't think about it. It just... happens."

Mr. Hargrove leaned back, his expression thoughtful. "You ever consider studying psychology? Or maybe sociology? There's a whole world of science that explains what you're seeing."

Sam frowned. "Science?"

"Sure. Body language, facial expressions, social cues-it's all part of human behavior. And you seem to have a knack for it."

The idea stuck with Sam for weeks. Psychology. Sociology. The thought of studying the things he'd always noticed without effort felt... right.
