A cartoonist talks to God. In 1989, cartoonist Michael Leunig began an experiment. Asked to produce a weekly cartoon for Sunday Age, Australia, he remembers wondering 'if newspapers might carry some small spiritual message of consolation as a tiny reparation for the enormous anxiety and distress they can create?' Since then, the two collection, A Common Prayer and the Prayer tree have brought his unique humour and intriguing drawings to a wide public across the world. "A person kneels to contemplate a tree and to reflect upon the troubles and joys of life. the person imagines mornings and evenings in a great forest of prayers, swarming and teeming with life. the person is learning how to pray." Michael Leunig.
One of the most beautiful, useful prayer books ever written

Yes. The fact that this tiny, brilliant book should cost 70 dollars is the same sort of crime that makes all higher education so largely unavailable. I know this all sounds hyperbolic, but truly, Michael Leunig is a too largely unsung spiritual master. These prayers are so deep, so lovely, so simple, some, of course, are so funny, that it's saddens me to know how few people -- certainly Americans, as his books are unavailable here -- will ever get to read them, or to get the comfort and perspective this little book provides. Each one has its own teeny, perfect Leunig cartoon that is, in its way, as moving and delightful as the prayer itself. I remember, once, trying to get this book from some bookseller, and was told, I believe it was by Penguin, that "Americans wouldn't appreciate it." Wrong. So stupidly wrong. If you're at all in the mood for a little sweet inspiration, buy a used copy.
