If all the sermons in this collection are read, it will be revealed that they indeed claim that the effectiveness of congregations cannot only be measured solely by its involvement in social engagement, nor do they claim that all the ills of society can be solved by a "one-size-fits-all" description.John Wesley could surely not be accused of such a posture, but there can be no doubt that there was an unquestioned commitment to addressing these ills by the faith community. "Thus should he show his zeal for works of piety; but much more for works of mercy; seeing 'God will have mercy and not sacrifice,' that is, rather than sacrifice. Whenever, therefore, one interferes with the other, works of mercy are to be preferred. Even reading, hearing, prayer are to be omitted, or to be postponed, 'at charity's almighty call;' when we are called to relieve the distress of our neighbor, whether in body or soul." Or maybe we need to be reminded of Bresee, "The first miracle after the baptism of the Holy Ghost was [wroughtly] upon a beggar. It means that the first service of a Holy Ghost-baptized church is to the poor; that its ministry is to those who are lowest down; that its gifts are for those who need them the most.
