The Power of Honor: An Excellent Book

For all those who think they know what "honor" is, you will be astonished as you read this book and are introduced to the multi-faceted nature of honor, as gleaned from the bible. 1 Peter 2:17 commands us to "Honor all." This book is not fluffy reading, as it takes you through 15 Chapters: Chapter 1: The High Cost of Dishonor Chapter 2: The Source of All Honor Chapter 3: Honor Given to Man Chapter 4: Honoring God's Word Chapter 5: Honor in Prayer Chapter 6: Honoring the Bride Chapter 7: Honoring Diverse Cultures Chapter 8: Honoring Cities Chapter 9: Honor Between Man and Women Chapter 10: Honoring Difficult People Chapter 11: Honoring Children Chapter 12: Honoring Old Age Chapter 13: Honoring the Helpless Chapter 14: Honor in Language Chapter 15: The Color of Worship The author Fawn Parish has a clear passion and vision to see God raise up a new generation of men and women who are committed to obeying God's command to "Honor all" (1 Peter 2:17). Throughout the book, she shares honest and heartfelt vignettes about her life in her own journey of "honoring all". Each chapter ends with a heartfelt prayer, Scriptures for meditation, and "Questions Worth Asking". This book is great for individual reading, but also is formatted for a small group. My favorite chapters were Chapters 4, 6 and 7. Chapter 4 was about honoring God's Word. Author Fawn Parish talks about the importance of hearing God's word with our whole personality--our heart, mind and will. She says: "We can get so preoccupied with the facts of the Word that we miss the heart of and mind of God altogether." She talks about biblical meditation, and about the fact that when we "quote God's Word to Him in prayer, we are saying that we value how He thinks. We are honoring who He is." This was so refreshing to hear. In our Christian subculture, there are so many prayers ascending to God's throne that sound more like a child's Christmas gift list to Santa Claus than what should be the fervent "Thy Kingdom Come" pleas of Christ's Beloved Bride/The Church. If only God's people would remember to honor God's word, and pray God's word back to God... My other favorite chapter was Chapter 6: Honoring the Bride. Author Fawn Parish says this: "When we criticize the Church, we are criticizing something Jesus adores and spilled His blood for. It is His own precious possession." That says it all. Finally, my final favorite chapter was Chapter 7: "Honoring Diverse Cultures". Author Fawn says: "God has purposely placed aspects of His own character and personality in each culture so that we can come to understand and enjoy who He is more completely as we understand and enjoy one another." If you are on a journey seeking to understand and enter into God's heart more fully, then this book will inspire and motivate you to honor God in ways you never thought of (based on the bible). This is an excellent read and will definitely challenge you to "Honor all" (1 Peter 2:17).
