Asset mapping isn't a new system or theory. It's a way of thinking, a doorway into an open-sum perspective rooted in the Bible and common experience. The Power of Asset Mapping, by long-time community developer Luther K. Snow, shows congregational leaders how to help a group recognize its assets and the abundance of God's gifts and to act on them in ministry and mission. Congregations will find the book easy to read and immediately useful. Leaders can begin with the tested Quick and Simple Asset Mapping Experience to strengthen and inspire any group in the congregation in as little as an hour. Futher tips, techniques, stories, and lessons drawn from the experience of diverse congregations will help readers discover how asset mapping works. Finally, Snow provides lessons about why asset mapping strengthens faith and community.
This is a wonderful book for ministers who are looking for new ways to work with their congregations as they look toward a vision of the future of their congregations. I would highly recommend it.

. . . and USE IT! Seriously, a development text designed for churches, but applicable to any non-profit or other organization where people have voluntarily come together with common purpose. Starts with the half-full optimism of assessment-based planning instead of the half-empty, need-based pessimism of some approaches. And it works!

This book describes the process to be used in a church to assist in helping the congregation identify its areas of passion in service. Asset mapping is a congregational alternative to having people identify their spiritual gifts, and applying those in areas of service.
What We Need is Here!

The Power of Asset Mapping is an amazing tool of community growth. It works from the premise that a congregation has all the gifts it needs to do what it needs to do -- we just haven't named them. It begins with one of the most enjoyable group activities I have ever facilitated: people gather in small groups and share what they love. Then it all gets put up on the wall and we connect the dots. We're currently doing this at my church, a very small congregation. and we're rockin'. The book begins with the practical and moves to the theoretical and anyone who buys the books can download worksheets from their website. I gave it four rather than five stars just because it gets repetitive.
Excellent Resource for the Church

Asset Mapping is something we all do everyday, but Luther Snow, show you how to use it to its fullest advantage to bring about change, action and most of all possibilities. Asset mapping is an excellent resource fro the church to help them discover what we have always known -- that the cup that is half empty, is also half full and when we focus on the positive assets we all bring to any given situation, God works through the details. I highly recommend this resource for any student of small groups, problems solvers, or possibility thinkers. Change your church by changing your mind. Rev. Michael VandenBerg
