In this novel, the author who served in the Navy fighting the South Pacific during WWII, takes the reader from per-World War II Boston to Vietnam-era China. The main character, Federick Robers, joins the Navy just before Pearl Harbor and is captured by the Japanese. He is forced into hard labor growning poppies to be turned into heroin and is used by his captors to test the addiction levels and effects of the drug. Years later, the Chinese seek out Roberts in an attempt to learn the whereabouts of a major supply of heroin hidden by the Japanese during World War II.
