John Michael Coia is the son of an Italian immigrant father and a Scottish mother who lives with his wife in a small village in Italy. "The village is the birthplace of my grandfather who made his way, on foot, to Scotland in the late eighteen hundreds. The hamlet now has fewer than twenty-five residents where once lived more than three hundred. My roots here are shared with those of the great tenor Mario Lanza, whose grandfather was also born here." He is writing the sequel.
