One probably could sit and read this entire work in one sitting - but that would not be the point. Liam Powell's seminal work is to be savored and enjoyed, as one does a fine meal. To start, Powell envelops the reader into his pathos, his psyche and his inner struggle. From his childhood trauma to his longing and loss that he suffers in his adulthood, one would have to be numb not to feel compassion for Powell's plight. His poems are masterful in their simplicity - easy to read and memorable in that his emotional message is universal. We have all loved and lost - we have all failed and have been humbled. One does not have to hail from Ardsley to relate to the smell of the garlic salt wafting from the Ardsley Pizzeria. Powell paints a picture that invites us into the places of which he is speaking. It is as if the reader is given a front row seat with full surround sound. Powell's poems are reminiscent of John Donne's poetry. Donne's poems - especially his later works were influenced by his life circumstances - He had been sickly, he had suffered great financial setback and he had lost many close friends. It is obvious that Powell has suffered in his life as well - both in love unrequited and his feelings of loneliness. His poems are universal in tone and theme. But life is full of hope and full of redemption. It is no accident that Powell ends with poems of religious hope and the answer that Powell has found for his own life. He writes of his own gratitude, his attention to mindfulness of the greatness of the Creator and finally, his message to trust in God. Many great poets such as Frost, Yeats and Whitman, found transcendence in the perfection of God's world, Liam Powell has produced a set of poems that gives the lucky reader something to cherish and enjoy for years to come.
