Isla Maren is 14 years old. When her mother says, "Pack light. We're leaving Earth for six months," Isla imagines an exciting space adventure. She thinks she will see amazing alien cities, do heroic missions, and maybe find a strange new pet. But the real trip is not like that. Isla ends up living in a plain metal habitat, listening to adults argue about sample labels and storage. Outside the habitat is Planet Vela, a place that feels like a secret waiting to be opened.
Vela is very unusual because it has two suns. Scientists call them Helion and Rysa. Helion is golden and steady, and its light makes the rocks shimmer. Rysa is smaller, blue-white, and it makes the air sparkle in a way cameras can barely capture. Because of these two suns, the sky changes color every hour. It can be coral-pink, then mint green, then deep violet, then pale silver. The sky looks like it is alive, changing moods again and again.
Isla tells herself she can manage this. Her mom, Dr. Nia Maren, is the expedition leader and a great scientist. Isla thinks she should be brave too. She wants to feel excited, not worried.
But on the first day, when Isla steps outside, she feels something strange. The two suns look like mismatched eyes watching the land. The ground is dark like cooled lava, and crystals ring softly under her boots like tiny bells. Everything makes two shadows, because there are two suns.
Then Isla sees something that shocks her. A shadow on a rock moves by itself. It peels away and slides sideways like a living creature. There are no clouds, and the suns did not shift in a normal way. The shadow stops for a moment, like it is thinking, then it darts behind a ridge and disappears.
Isla's heart pounds. She tries to tell herself it is only a trick of light, but she knows what she saw. The shadow chose to move, and Isla felt that someone beyond the ridge wanted her to notice.
