The Pipes are Calling: A Story of Hearts in War

This is the story of lovers who've previously loved and lost, thanks to the war in Afghanistan. They and several other couples slowly recover, because when the right two people meet in love, each becomes more than they are.

Rainey Gauge's life is pakaru. A New Zealand war widow still in love with her dead husband, she's been inseminated with his swimmers in Auckland, before taking a job in Texas as an equestrian coach to a wealthy family. On a flight to Switzerland to find a suitable mount for the family's daughter, she meets the genial corporate pilot, Ditch Deitrick, who's a veteran of the Afghanistan War. They get to know and like each other in the cockpit.

Ditch is in a bit of a pickle, too, coincidently involving a request from his recently re-surfaced ex-wife for a sperm donation, so she and her pardner Jenna can have a child. Without revealing her own recent insemination, Rainey says, "You know, mate, AI isn't that weird. It's how we breed the broodmares on our family farm. They seem to prefer it." Ditch gently disagrees: "Maybe it's my mom's Spanish blood in me, but if I'm ever gonna do the baby thing, I want to do it passionately, and preferably by direct deposit."

A few days later, he makes such a deposit when he and Rainey are overcome by mutual attraction. This complicates their friendship and more, because of an uncertainty about paternity.
