On August 10, 2018, Richard Russell, a Horizon Air ground crew member, committed an unprecedented act: he stole a plane from Seattle-Tacoma Airport and took off without authorization. With no flight experience, Russell managed to pilot the plane and perform aerial maneuvers before intentionally crashing on Ketron Island, where he lost his life.
During the flight, Russell frequently communicated with air traffic controllers, revealing a contrasting mix of emotions: enthusiasm and resignation, desire for freedom and personal crisis.
These audio recordings caused this tragic story to evoke not hatred or fear, but rather admiration and emotion from many people.
