John J. Hansen's poetry collection, The Photic Zone, picks up where Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea leaves off. Having escaped Davy Jones but still stranded on a dire beach, a shipwrecked sailor sets off in hope of rescue by swimming through violent waves to what turns out to be a whaling ship. Instead of being rescued, however, he is haunted by Jones and churned by storms of tragic disillusionment and malicious deception. The journey is far-reaching, including visits to an icy Atlantic shipwreck, a lush kelp forest, and a brief but jarring jettison into the unforgiving deserts of Nevada. Ultimately, he challenges himself to break free from the murky depths of despair and secure a holdfast in the gentle light of The Photic Zone.
