The Pheonix Tree, by Jon Cleary is one of the most exciting books I've read in my life. Perfectly encapturing the feelings and emotions of Japanese people in WWII, it provides endless hours of both suspense and entertainment. Being mostly about spies, I almost came to the conclusion that he must have been one himself, even though I know otherwise. The plot encompasses two 'agents', Kenji Minato and Tomazo Okada who are sent an a mission to Japan. Their Goal? To obtain information on the Peace Faction in order to end the war quicker; however, when they have been immersed in the hell that Japan was in they began wondering if they were on the wright side. Both becoming heros, they still remained American to the bitter end, but both being scarred for life by this.Jon Cleary once again displayed his talent by writing this magnificent book. As judged the the literary critic "The Observer", this book is 'completely entertaining', and I could only agree.
