Book Overview

From the beloved author of Love Comes Softly comes an inspiring work of historical fiction about a young Jewish woman, plucked from obscurity and thrust on a perilous journey, only to witness the world's most life-changing story.

Like most young women in ancient Israel, Mary has little control over her own destiny. When Enos, a rising Pharisee, sees her one day in the market--the most beautiful woman he has ever laid eyes on--and determines to make her his wife, Mary's fate is quickly sealed. His exorbitant bride price is the only hope her parents have of escaping abject poverty, but surely the fact that such a devout and esteemed man has chosen a girl of her station must be a sign of blessing.

When Mary enters training to become the proper Pharisee's wife, it is as though she has been abandoned in a foreign land, where one misstep could cost her greatly. That feeling only deepens when she discovers Enos is all she feared he might be, treating her merely as a prize he has won--and worse. Then rumors of a miracle-working, traveling Prophet change everything, and Mary and Enos are swept up in events that will challenge all they hold dear and forever alter both their futures.

Inspiring biblical fiction.

In this new release by Janette Oke, readers are transported back to the tumultuous first century. The story centers around Mary, a young Jewish girl from a small village, whose life takes a dramatic turn when she catches the attention of a rising Pharisee named Enos. This unexpected attention catapults her onto a perilous journey. Mary is uprooted from the familiarity of her home and embarks on an intense training regimen designed to prepare her for the role of a Pharisee's wife. This new life, however, comes with heavy burdens. Enos, the man she is expected to marry, begins to reveal his true nature—a controlling and self-serving individual who views her more as a mere trophy. As his moral corruption deepens, Mary feels increasingly entrapped and powerless. Amidst her struggles, the arrival of a mysterious prophet and rabbi named Jesus introduces a glimmer of hope. His teachings of love, compassion, and redemption resonate deeply with her and her heart begins to stir with the possibility of change, not just for herself, but for everyone around her. This is unlike any other book by Janette Oke that I have read! The backdrop of the early days of Christ's ministry is vividly painted, and the themes of redemption shine brightly throughout. Mary’s character, with her gentle innocence and unwavering spirit, made me want to step into the pages of the story and protect her from the villain. Enos was quite the villain, making the parts where he is present challenging to read. This tale is not just a journey of one girl; it is a profound exploration of faith, resilience, and forgiveness. I received an advance reader copy from the publisher. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
