Blinded in an automobile accident the very first night of her honeymoon, Philadelphia native Cassidy Grant goes to live at Waverly Hall in a rural, southern town in Georgia. Cassidy had married Chad Waverly after a courtship of only a couple of weeks at a winter retreat in Florida. Knowing nothing about the southern gentleman, she learns much--too much for comfort.

First, she discovers that Chad was married before--a fact he concealed during their courtshop. Kaitlyn, his first wife, had died under mysterious circumstances. She was an heiress and left Chad her fortune. Chad then became engaged to Valerie, a wealthy widow. Valerie, too, died under strange conditions--before the wedding, but not before signing a will leaving everything to Chad.

Perhaps because of her blindness, Cassidy is very sensitive to the menacing atmosphere of the old house and to the unsettling past of her groom. As she tries to adjust to her handicap and to the new marriage, she is fearlessly attacked by a "phantom" on many attempts. Without sight, she is at the killer's mercy and tries to uncover the madman's identity.
