The evolution of the plantation into sharecropping continued, slowly. Years later, without the menacing presence of the owner's staff, a young boy, given the name of Jeffery by the landowner, has grown up working in the kitchen with Jane, the landowners cook, is working in the fields alongside the older men. After many grueling days of back breaking labor, planting, harvesting cotton and vegetables, without complaint, on one particularly long hard day in the field he was approached by one of the older men who observed his hard work. The next day the same man who had never worked beside him in the fields, chose to do so. As they worked down a long row planting small vegetable sets the older man asked, "Why have you not joined the worship?" Jeffery was hesitant and didn't reply. Even though he knew the war had given him his freedom he continued to comply with many of the pre-war restrictions. Avoiding religious practices was one of them. The older man repeated his question and waited for a reply. Jeffery was silent for several moments. "Why should I go to worship?" He asked. Without hesitation, the old man replied, "To be saved!" Jeffery, befuddled, responded," I don't understand, the war is over, we're free!" The old man stared at him with a look of disbelief and replied," If you're free, why do you remain here? Join the worship service, this evening, at the big barn and hear the answer." The encounter with the old man bothered Jeffery for the rest of the day. His invitation, "Join me at the worship service this evening at the big barn and hear the answer,"
