I read this book when it first came out, in the mid-1980's. It's a splendid book, and somewhat different from the kinds of novels I have read by him. Wilson here was quite prescient, as he imagines his main character using software that is very similar to Photoshop, years before Photoshop existed. Of course, Wilson is almost always a novelist of ideas, which you would know if you have read almost all of his stuff, as I have. Hence the book is really an effort at modeling or experimenting with Wilson's theories of personality development, especially as regards self-esteem, which some may or may not buy into. I myself find them very compelling as shown in this novel, and I wonder if one could actually implement his ideas right now using Photoshop.
