Discovered by Louise ?Biddy? Hammett, the long lost collection of the works of Carrie Fall Benson is finally in book form. The Pen of Carrie Fall Benson has been published by LaGrange (Georgia) College. The first official librarian at the institution, Carrie Fall Benson (1891-1949) of LaGrange was one of the earliest Georgia writers of realism. Writing over 300 poems, numerous short stories, and more than 30 plays produced throughout the South, Benson was a highly awarded member in a variety of early national and Georgia poetry societies. She was active in the Georgia writers? groups that organized and met at Oglethorpe University and Emory. Benson received scores of awards, even winning out over noted Atlanta poets Marel Brown and Dr. Anderson Sruggs in receiving the Gould Award for her poem ?There is Loneliness.? Brown remains so esteemed that the Georgia Poetry Society presents an annual award in the name of Marel Brown for the best poem produced within the society. Bettie Sellers, Poet Laureate of Georgia, 1997-2001, has written the foreword for this compilation.
